The temperature on the sealing lip is the operational temperature increased by the temperature result of frictional heat. The higher the effective operating temperature, the faster the ageing of the elastomer will be, thus affecting the performance and “life” of the sealing lip and the shaft.
Frictional heat depends on seal design, material, peripheral speed, sealing lip preload (garter spring force), shaft design, surface finish, lubrication, sealed medium, etc.
