General Materials Information

The most important component of the sealing element is the lip material. You must consider the environmental conditions and the function of the seal as follows: resistance to media being sealed, good resistance to the operational temperatures, good resistance to water, low compression set, material tensile strength (appropriate material duro-value), and overall material cost.

In order to satisfy most sealing applications, Truseals has the materials available to get the job done.

MATERIAL

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES

Nitrile

(Buna-N, NBR)

Is a co-polymer of Butadiene and Acryonirile. Good resistance, cold flow, tear resistance.  Commonly referred to as Buna-N or NBR. Poor resistance to ozone and weather aging. Poor cold temperature limit, dry running ability, water resistance. Lower mechanical strength. Fair resistance to water, dry running. Low temperature resistance is fair.

Polyacrylate

(PA)

Polymerized acrylic acid-esters or PA and ACM. Good resistance to mineral oils, hypoid gear oils E.P. additives, greases, aging and flex cracking. Low resistance to hydrocarbon fluids like gasoline or paraffin fluids.

Silicone

(SIL)

Broad temperature range. Good ozone resistance. Resistant to compression set.

Fluoroelastomer

(FPM, FKM)

Good temperature resistance. Commonly chosen as high temperature replacement for Nitrile or Polyacrylate.

Truseals offers a wide range of specialty materials and hybrids. Please call with your operational requirements.
